Contraindications

At Studio YOU, your safety and results always come first. Certain medical conditions, medications, and recent treatments may affect whether cosmetic tattooing is suitable for you. Please review the information below carefully and let me know if any apply.

Note: Some conditions only require awareness, while others may delay or prevent treatment. In some cases, a doctor’s approval is required before proceeding.

Not Suitable for Treatment

Pregnancy – Cosmetic tattooing is not performed during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding – Cosmetic tattooing is not performed while breastfeeding.
Keloid scarring – Unfortunately, clients with a history of keloids cannot be treated.
Accutane/Isotretinoin – Must be discontinued for 6–12 months prior.
Active contagious skin conditions – Treatment must wait until the area is completely clear.
Chemotherapy/Radiation – Requires written clearance from your doctor.
Recent hyperpigmentation in wound areas – Not suitable for tattooing.

Require Medical Clearance or Discussion

Diabetes – May require a doctor’s note depending on type and severity.
Heart conditions – Consent is essential due to numbing products used.
Autoimmune disorders – Please discuss your specific condition and medications with me.
Seizure-related conditions – Doctor’s approval required, and you must bring a support person.
Cancer history – Doctor’s certificate required.
Hepatitis (liver disease) – Doctor’s clearance required.

May Affect Healing or Results

Oily skin – Pigment may fade faster.
Dehydration - Skin becomes dry, tight, and less elastic and doesn’t “accept” pigment as easily because the epidermis isn’t supple enough to allow smooth implantation.
Bruising easily / excessive bleeding – Can affect healing and retention.
Depression or anxiety – Please ensure you feel prepared, as the process can feel emotional.
Previous poor healing or fading – Let me know if you’ve experienced issues before.

Timing Considerations

Chemical peels, facials, or laser treatments – Wait 2–4 weeks before and after.
Fillers or Botox – Leave at least 2 weeks before and after tattooing.
Retin-A, glycolic acids, or resurfacing products – Discontinue 4 weeks prior and avoid using over the tattooed area.
Fake tan/sunbeds – Avoid for 2 weeks before and after.

Special Notes

Cold sores (herpes simplex) – For lip tattooing, you must take an antiviral (e.g., Valtrex or Famvir) if you’ve ever had a cold sore. These are available at your pharmacy or via GP prescription.
Dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis – Cannot treat if active around the tattoo area.
Prescription medications – Please disclose all current medications, especially those that cause photosensitivity (e.g., antibiotics, anti-inflammatories).

Aftercare Reminder

To ensure proper healing, for at least 10 days post-treatment you must avoid:
Sweating
Saunas & swimming
Heavy exercise
Getting the area wet (eg. in the shower).

At Studio YOU, your health, comfort, and safety are always my priority. Please be open and honest during your consultation AND when completing consent forms so I can provide you with the safest, most beautiful results possible.
